Principal photography on feature film Filth, written and directed by Jon S. Baird (Cass) is officially announced today. James McAvoy (Arthur Christmas), Jamie Bell (The Adventures of Tintin), Jim Broadbent (The Iron Lady), Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), and Imogen Poots (Jane Eyre) star.

Shooting the film based on the best-selling novel by Irvine Welsh has commenced in Glasgow, Scotland as well as on location in Sweden, Belgium and Hamburg.

McAvoy plays the leading role of Bruce Robertson, a corrupt Scottish police officer and cocaine addict who has to solve a brutal murder case with an ambitious colleague, mentee-cum-sidekick, Ray Lennox (Bell). Bruce flees from, his sexual endeavors eventually backfiring and his various short or long-termed schemes and plots against his colleagues in order to secure the hoped-for promotion to Detective Inspector.

Poots will be playing Amanda Drummond, a colleague of Bruce’s.

Scottish novelist Irvine Welsh, best known for his novel Trainspotting, also co-wrote a script with Baird. Baird commented:

Filth is filled with irreverent comedy and some extremely surreal moments, but ends with a sharp twist of poignancy. The character of Bruce Robertson has to show such a wide range that it could only take an actor as talented as James McAvoy (pictured) to pull it off with the necessary charm and humanity.

Producer Marshall added:

Bruce Robertson is not only a guilty pleasure, but a character edgier than all the other characters from Irvine Welsh’s works combined. With Filth we have the chance to make a bold and outrageous film that I have no doubt will be unique, darkly funny and ultimately commercial.”

Lionsgate will be releasing Filth.

I hope you have all had a great festive period – and let’s all be eagerly awaiting James’ upcoming projects for this year, including Welcome to the Punch, Filth and Trance! I have recently gotten hold of Atonement on Blu-Ray, and so have replaced the 855 DVD screen captures with 1,104 gorgeous HD-quality captures. This is probably my favourite film of James’, and is just simply gorgeous to watch. Enjoy!

Earlier this month Simon Kinberg, a producer on X-Men: First Class from the beginning and who probably oversaw the many drafts that made up that prequel/reboot, was revealed as 20th Century Fox’s choice to scribe the sequel. The announcement (although yet to be confirmed by a Fox press release) has probably signalled to cast members that it’s actually ok to start discussing the next movie which so far has an undetermined start date (though 2013 for a 2014 release is looking very likely).

James McAvoy has been speaking to i09 (via Bleeding Cool) and revealed details about how he and director Matthew Vaughn are approaching his character Charles Xavier’s mindset for the sequel;

I know that with Charles, you either have to write him out of the movie or give him an interesting story… He’s lost his best friend, essentially, and he’s just been paralyzed from the waist down. Which is just a huge, huge blow to his considerable ego. So he’s got to deal with that.

I don’t care if he’s a superhero and has brain powers or not, he’s just had a huge part of his physical life taken away from him, by someone he cares about more than anyone else. So he’s got to deal with that. That’s part of the interesting ideas that we’re talking about with Matthew [Vaughn], that Matthew’s very excited about which I think is fantastic, but I can’t really get into them with you because they may (or may not) form the spine of the story…

…That’s what Matthew is talking about, he’s come up with a particularly interesting idea, last time I spoke with him. So he’s pitching that to Fox, and they’ve basically just got to write the script.

Notice in the last couple of sentences McAvoy claims Vaughn is pitching to Fox which probably means, at least accurate to the last time he spoke to Vaughn, that the studio haven’t yet given writer Simon Kinberg and Vaughn the green light to put pen to paper on these ideas, one of which we know for sure was to begin the movie with Magneto helping along the bullet from Lee Harvey Oswald that killed JFK because he wouldn’t acknowledge the mutants work in stopping global annihilation from World War III. This would be continuing the idea that the X-Men characters have been significantly involved in the history of modern American politics.

Vaughn told us over the summer;

“I thought it would be fun to open with the Kennedy Assassination, and we reveal that the magic bullet was controlled by Magneto. That would explain the physics of it, and we see that he’s pissed off because Kennedy took all the credit for saving the world and mutants weren’t even mentioned.”

Though it’s also probably wise for me to point out that Matthew Vaughn himself isn’t yet signed up for the sequel and has said next year he will be making a movie with Mark Millar. Though by the time the X-Men: First Class sequel is ready to go, we are sure he will be too.
